It’s time for Spring Cleaning again! So bust open your windows, turn up some music, and roll up your sleeves. Our Ultimate Guide will help you be a mean, green, spring cleaning machine in no time.

We’re not going to lie… spring cleaning isn’t exactly a party, but there’s a reason this tradition has been around for so long! There’s nothing quite as satisfying as giving your home an annual refreshing, but if you’re overwhelmed these are our favorite tips and tricks so you can know where to start, what to focus on, and what not to forget!

Of course spring cleaning is about… well, cleaning! However, this is a wonderful opportunity to check the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors (this should be done twice a year), and make sure units are free of dust. Do you own a fire extinguisher? Is it up to date? If you don’t -get one! Learn how to use it and make sure the rest of your household knows how to as well. It could be a life saver! It’s best to always have one in your kitchen and even your garage. If it has been awhile, go ahead and discuss escape plans with everyone in the event of a fire or any other emergency. It’s also a good idea to have these escape/floor plans posted somewhere where they can be easily seen often! Better safe than sorry!

Pack Away Winter

You won’t be needing your shovels, salt, or scrapers for your driveway anymore, so get em out of the way! Pack up any seasonal decorations or other fall and winter gear and bring out garden tools and potting supplies. This means your wardrobe too! Whether it’s time to completely free up space and donate some coats or sweaters, or you just wanna rearrange so your summer attire is easier to reach -now is the best time! Here’s some tips on how to declutter your closet!

Wash Windows

Window sills and screens tend to accumulate more dirt and dust than you would think! We all make a lot of use of our windows during the warmer months, so this is an important step in your spring cleaning routine! We recommend tackling this job on a moderate or partly clouding day to avoid your cleaning solution to dry out to quickly, leaving your windows streaky. Wipe down your window sills and don’t forget to give your screens a good scrubbing! Some people have been known to use kerosene to clean their screens, but usually using warm water and a mild dish-washing liquid will do just fine. Scrub each screen with a brush; then rinse thoroughly.

After your windows are done move on to your drapes, curtains, and blinds. To bring drab drapes back to life, take them down, remove any hooks and run them through a fluff cycle in the dryer with a damp towel ( this helps attract dust) for 10 to 15 minutes, then hang with right back up afterwards to avoid wrinkles. Most curtains are machine washable but make sure you read all labels just to be safe. Wipe down blinds with a damp cloth, then enjoy your nice new view.

Sliding Door Tracks

Sliding glass door tracks are probably the last place you would think to clean, but spring cleaning is about getting every nook and cranny after all! We’ve found the best way is to scrub the tracks with an old, dry toothbrush to loosen up any debris. Grab it all up with your vacuum hose, then clear it all out with a wet sponge or cloth!

Dust Dust Dust

Take everything off tabletops, bookshelves, and dressers to dust. Now is the perfect time to get to all the places you’ve been neglecting throughout the year: light fixtures, ceiling fans, vents, above kitchen cabinets, baseboards and doorways. Don’t forget to vacuum up all the dust that ends up settling on the floor! We want to get rid of the dust not just move it around! Use a microfiber cloth to dust fixtures and bulbs within your reach (be careful on your ladder folks!). To clean grimy bulbs, lightly dampen a cloth with vinegar. Take our word for it, you’ll wanna make sure that bulbs are cooled down and  that your hands are dry or this is not gonna be a good time!

For upholstered furniture, grab cushions and take them outside and beat them by hand to remove any dust trapped in them. Use a vacuum’s crevice tools to clean under seat cushions. Check the labels or tags for how to remove any stains there might be. For wooden furniture, wipe the surfaces with a soft cloth dampened with water and mild soap if necessary. Apply wax a few feet at a time with a cotton rag. Let wax dry, then buff with a clean cloth. Restore leather with an upholstery cleaner and conditioner. For nubuck leather, use a suede brush.
